  • The essence of this project is the connection of plans and sections of Bongrae-dong’s ruptured space back into the city grid. In plan, Bongrae-dong did not follow the mega grid of the city. In section, it was much below its surrounding cities. This project aims to reattach these spatial anomalies to the urban fabric.

Rusted barges along the seashore was part of the neighborhood's identity which then was used as the main factor of the elongation of the city grid. The city grid was extended along the seashores and had the barges to act as stations/observatories on each end.

The project’s final form depicts two grids layered on top of each other; Bongrae-dong’s grid at the bottom and the extension of the city grid at the top. The extension of the urban grid offers people to fluidly come through to the ruptured site.

Revealing only the structures of the factories can act as a gesture of reopening the neighborhood. It serves the people a delightful view from the elevated layer looking down to the space they never realized its existence.

As the given time for this competition was only a week, it's a shame to not have developed more thoughts on the spaces these two intersected grids would make. However, working with other international architecture students was a notable experience.
