Changwon is an important city for modern history of democracy in Korea. It is a city where the Bu-Ma Democratic Protests emerged, containing many heritage sites, including the site of Juyuel Kim’s salvation.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the project conveys a solemn mood by eliminating curvy profiles and to only use short and straight lines and faces. At the same time, by elevating the mass, the main entrance was created in a concave form for a fluid circulation from the park into the hall. In contrast, the number of window openings were minimized for the formative expression of the democracy hall.

Democracy Hall should not only be a space to commemorate but also to cherish and preserve the democratic spirit.
